CertainTeed Shingle Repair: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

If you have a failing CertainTeed shingle in Orange County, the repair typically costs $385 to $650 for a standard single-area fix, and we can usually have a matching shingle in hand and installed same week. Most homeowners find out they need this repair after a Santa Ana wind event lifts a shingle, or after heavy winter rain reveals a leak near a roof penetration. We stock CertainTeed-compatible repair stock and install it to match your existing roof as closely as the product line allows.

CertainTeed shingles are built to last, but any shingle in Orange County takes real punishing: relentless UV on south-facing slopes, salt air near Huntington Beach and Newport, and those dry winter winds that sneak under a loose tab. The shingle itself rarely fails first. What fails is the sealant strip, the nail line, or the flashing detail around it. That’s the point of this page: to show you what actually goes wrong, what it costs to fix, and how to know if the repair will hold.

We are an independent roofing contractor in Orange County. We install and repair CertainTeed products, but we are not affiliated with CertainTeed. We stock factory-grade repair shingles because we want the color and exposure to match without waiting on a distributor run.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes dozens of shingle lines, and the repair part depends on which line is on your roof. The most common CertainTeed shingles we repair in Orange County are the XT 25, XT 30, Landmark, Landmark Pro, Presidential Shake, and Highland Slate. Each has its own exposure, dimension, and color pattern. A XT 25 shingle is a standard 3-tab, while Landmark is an architectural shingle with a thicker dimensional profile. You cannot swap a 3-tab tab for a Presidential Shake shingle and have it look right, or seal properly.

To identify what you have, look at the bundle wrapper in your garage or attic, or pull the permit record from your home purchase. CertainTeed prints the product name and color on the bundle label. Colors matter as much as the model. Landmark Moire Black and Landmark Heather Blend are different colors, and a mismatch on a repaired section is visible from the street. The color name is printed in plain text on the bundle. If the bundle is gone, we match by photograph and exposure measurement.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: CertainTeed does not authorize generic aftermarket “compatible” shingles for repair, and neither does the shingle warranty. Using an off-brand shingle to patch a CertainTeed roof doesn’t just look off, it can void the limited warranty on the surrounding field. We always use the same CertainTeed line when it’s still in production. If the line is discontinued, we source from CertainTeed’s current replacement equivalents or from certified surplus. We tell you which route we’re taking before the repair begins.

Signs Your CertainTeed Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Curling at the corners or along the bottom edge. This is delamination starting. The fiberglass mat is separating from the asphalt layer, usually because the shingle has reached the end of its service life or was installed with too little ventilation above it. Curling shingles catch wind and tear off, which opens the roof deck.
  • Granule loss collecting in the gutter. Every CertainTeed shingle sheds some granules in its first year. Beyond that, a pile of granules at the downspout means the asphalt is exposed and the shingle is aging faster than it should. UV in Orange County accelerates this on south and west slopes.
  • Lifted tabs after a wind event. The factory sealant strip loses its grip over time. When a Santa Ana blows through at 35 or 40 mph, unsealed tabs flap. A flapping shingle breaks its fiberglass mat at the nail line, and then you’ve got a torn shingle, not just a lifted one. The fix is a fresh repair using a sealant that works in our climate.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below a roof penetration. The shingle isn’t usually the leak. The leak is the pipe boot, the skylight, the valley, or a nail pop near a seam. The shingle gets blamed because water shows up under it. We trace the leak to the actual point of entry and repair that, then replace any shingle we lifted or damaged to get there.
  • Missing shingles you can see from the yard. No symptom is simpler. A missing CertainTeed shingle means an exposed nail line and a direct path for water. Orange County roofs look great for years, then lose a few shingles in one winter storm. The roof deck rots quickly once water gets under felt and into plywood.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

CertainTeed shingle repair in Orange County runs from $385 to $650 for a single-area repair (a few shingles, one penetration, one lifted section). If the repair involves a full slope or dozens of shingles, the range moves to $650 to $1,200. That includes matching shingles, underlayment repair if needed, sealant, nails, and our labor to cut out and replace the shingles properly.

The biggest cost driver is access and slope. A one-story ranch in Mission Viejo is a straightforward ladder job. A two-story home in Anaheim Hills with a 12/12 pitch takes longer and costs more. The second driver is matching: if your color or line is discontinued, we may need to order from a surplus source, and the material price moves up. We put all of this on paper before we start.

Every CertainTeed shingle repair we do is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s our written guarantee: if the repair fails within one year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The price you sign is the price you pay, no surprises at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do: get a photo of the failed shingle from the ground or a ladder, read the color and model name off the bundle if you can find it, and check your gutter for granules. That information helps us quote the job before we drive out. You can also put a tarp over a leaking interior area from inside the attic if you can reach it from a stable position, but don’t go onto the roof itself.

Where DIY goes wrong: walking on a roof with lifted shingles breaks more shingles. Hammering in a lifted tab without sealant gives you a temporary fix that fails in the next wind. And pulling up shingles without understanding the nail line or the underlayment will create a bigger leak than the one you’re chasing. Shingle repair on a pitch or on a two-story roofline is genuinely dangerous. The shingles may be worth repairing yourself on paper, but the hospital bill or the re-roof bill if you puncture a deck will dwarf the $385 repair cost.
